Respect is so essential to the human psyche that it’s often referred to as “The Golden Rule” and is a primary tenet of every major spiritual teaching.

As humans interacting with other humans, it’s impossible for us to escape the impacts of the distribution of power. Love it or hate it, we’re all involved in the game- you’re either seeking and yielding power, or you’re a pawn being played by others more powerful than you. Our desire for power is not evil or antisocial; it’s a natural response to our need to navigate and survive in a complex, competitive, and sometimes even hostile world.

Specific emotions are readily contagious within a group of people, whether this be in a family, a team, or across an organization. These emotions include anxiety, fear, and/or desire. Leaders & Influencers play a pivotal role in determining which of these takes hold as conditions and circumstances develop and evolve over time. This role becomes instrumental when unexpected stressors and negative external conditions rear their heads.

Desire aligns individual “why’s” with the organizational “why”. It’s essential to sustainable
performance improvement, and is directly fueled through a strong sense of Belonging.

05 | Fuel the Fire: The Principle of PROGRESS

According to Earl Nightingale, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.” While the how, the why, the context, and the measure are different for each of us, feeling that we’re making some level of progress is essential. Being appreciated makes us feel good about…us. And we like to feel good. Most of us had our first encounters with appreciation ‘back in the day’- whether it was your mom or dad carrying on about your newest creation, the joy of seeing a gold star at the top of your page, or the warmth of your teacher's praise when you recited the alphabet. Fast forward to the adult world- a maze of deadlines, bills, taxes, meetings, less-than nice people, requirements, regulations, constraints, demands, our needs and desires remain unchanged.

No matter our age, at our core, we all yearn for that gold star, that nod of approval, that simple acknowledgment that says, "I see you. You matter." Being ‘seen’ and appreciated goes far beyond what simply “feels good”. It’s a fundamental human need.

07 | Embrace Equity?: The Principle of JUSTICE

Today's workplaces are melting pots of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives.
Justice plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the benefits of such diversity are harnessed. Unfortunately, the term equity is currently being perverted and misrepresented by many, which is only hurting the cause it’s designed to address. Interestingly, the definitions of
equity and justice are almost word-for-word…the same.

Justice in the workplace is not merely a matter of titles, wages, and promotions- it’s about recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual while offering opportunities and rewards based on merit and merit alone. Such environments enrich organizations and societies with an abundance of ideas, experiences, and skills.
